At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One print entitled, "Free Negroes in Hayti" by Adalbert John Volck dated approximately 1861-1863. Volck's illustration is a caricature of Haitians. To raise money for the Confederacy, he has satirized Black Haitians as savages who sacrifice their children. Illustration does contain graphic violence of cannibalism.
