At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes about his worsening health, "I am growing gradually worse - am confronting an open grave and hope soon to slide into it and be at rest." Informs that he is nearly blind and cannot sign his name without help from another. Written by someone else and signed by Spinner in a very shaky hand.
