At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed by John A. Gray. Smith, a United States Representative 1853-1854, had been accused of missing an important vote on the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Claiming previous misrepresentation in the Tribune, argues that he voted against the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which he calls the "Nebraska bill."
