Discusses whether President Rutherford B. Hayes will support his case, which had been before a military board, concerning his conduct during the Battle of Second Manassas. Discusses his desire to keep the case separate from politics, and remarks that Republicans are defensive about the case. Praises the political practices of James Garfield (Representative 1863-1880). Notes that Mr. Chandler should have taken Garfield's course (Senator Zachariah Chandler). Requests that the recipient send John C. Bullitt and Joseph Hodges Choate, his counsels, a copy of the Express. Written on Central Railroad Co. of New Jersey stationery.
