At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Writing from the camp hospital, he informs Bill that he has the Ague (fever) and had the shakes terribly the night before. His fever is broken, though, and he is not in danger, just weakened by the fever, and wants to return to duty in a week or so. He briefly mentions how he greatly dislikes Helena. Written at Camp Bedford.
