re: Writing from the camp hospital, he informs Bill that he has the Ague (fever) and had the shakes terribly the night before. His fever is broken, though, and he is not in danger, just weakened by the fever, and wants to return to duty in a week or so. He briefly mentions how he greatly dislikes Helena.
