At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encott writes that he is enclosing a letter that asks him to be candidate for an election in Duchess County. He is letting Philip know that he will not be able to be there until after the election takes place. He also asks for his opinion if his being a candidate is a good thing for the party as he would not want to cause any problems.
