At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from President Reagan to Moorhead thanking him for his support in getting the peacekeeper missiles deployed starting in 1986. He also mentions that this will help make the arms reduction more secure, and safe. Reagan also thanks Moorhead for his support of the Scowcroft Commission's recommendations, and says he looks forward to continuing the work towards the elimination of all nuclear weapons. This letter is on White House stationery.
