At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

From the archive of Alba M. Tucker, Assistant Quarter Master. Collection consists of telegrams, general orders, an annual report to the Quartermaster General, printed biographical sketches, newspaper clippings, and one photograph concerning the military service of Alba M. Tucker, particularly his role in the planned transport of Jefferson Davis from Nashville, Tenn., to Washington, D.C. after Davis's capture in May 1865.
