"Army Correspondence" from the front in Green Pond, South Carolina describes conditions, particularly religious implications. "Baptists and the Struggle for Independence" published in the Christian Index wishes the Confederacy victory. A letter and an article describe the distribution of the paper to soldiers, and another article describes "The Piety of the Confederates." An editorial titled "A Perverse Generation" examines the separation from the U.S. government and rejoices to no longer be responsible for their acts. An article examines the proportion of soldiers who are religious. The editors contrast the speech by President Davis with "the wretched puerilities" from the "illiterate and vulgar tyrant who occupies the throne at Washington." "Secular News," a third of page 3, is devoted to war news, including a "Telegraphic Synopsis" of President Davis's Address to Congress and a dispatch from Braxton Braggs.
