At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Secretary of the Navy Southard commands Lieutenant Mayo, who is in Annapolis, Maryland, to report to Commodore Banon for duty on board the frigate "Guerriere." Signed note on verso says an attack of bilious fever kept him from joining the ship. He would have had the rank of first lieutenant.
