At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title continues: "Prepared by Command of Maj. Gen. George B. Mc.Clellan U.S.A. Commd'g Army of the Potomac A.A. Humphreys Brig. Gen. and Chief of Top. Engr's." Accomplished on four pieces on joined wove paper. Photographed at the Coast Survey Office. Signed and inscribed in upper right corner "Genl Heintzelman Respects of Capt. Abbot." Henry Larcom Abbot of the First Topographical Engineers, who compiled this map, was an 1854 West Point graduate. Abbot was wounded at First Manassas; he reached the rank of brevet major general. Postwar, he served as a consulting engineer for the Panama Canal.
