At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by Secretary of State William H. Seward. Official notification of President Lincoln to Victoriana Castellanos, Acting President of the Republic of Honduras, that he has appointed James R. Partridge of Maryland as "Minister Resident of the United States" to Honduras. Partridge was appointed on 10 February 1862, presented his credentials in Honduras on 25 April 1862, and terminated his mission on 14 November 1862.
