At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Not signed. Written by Burr as a member of the Isthmian Canal Commission to retired Rear Admiral Walker as President of the canal commission. Typed copy of Burr's letter to Walker; written on the letterhead of the Isthmian Canal Commission. Burr is offering his resignation as he knows the president wants to reorganize the commission. Expresses his pleasure of serving on the commission.
