At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports to his wife, "with pleasure," that he is well and hopes that she is the same. Expresses that he is "sorry that paper and time is so scarce with you up there that it takes two of you to fill a half sheet." Tells her that he is going to Georgetown tomorrow to visit some of the sick boys. Asks that when she writes to him next time that she writes a full sheet. Signs the letter off by stating, "so you se how us soldiers are useed more like beasts than men." Letter is addressed to Masonville in Delaware County, New York.
