At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that the troops are preparing to leave their camp, mentioning that they may go to Washington D.C. to be mustered into the United States service. Describes the marching band that is playing and speculates that the band will go with them. Writes to her "give my love to all my friends and keep a part for yourself." Letter written in pencil.
