At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his uncle John reporting on his cousin Josiah Henry's enlistment process. Mentions that Josiah put his glasses in his pocket in order to be accepted. Expresses deep sorrow as he watched Josiah's train leave for Washington, D.C. Reports Josiah will be sending money to him. Includes a scrap from a diary with short note to his uncle Ansel, not signed. Envelope has a patriotic emblem.
