At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints an editorial observing that "…however various the Sentiments respecting the Merits of this System, all good men are agreed in the necessity that exists, of an Efficient Federal Government." Also includes a letter from John Adams in Amsterdam, in which he argues that no state in the American confederation would voluntarily revolt, and intelligence from London and around the United States. Notes President George Washington's upcoming visit to Massachusetts and Boston. Includes an article on paying debts, an abstract from the journal of the first session of the Senate, a report on the Treasury, and various other news items.
