At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes, "The Secretary of State has the honor of conveying to the Secretary of war the wish of the President, that instead of a meeting at his House at [text loss] o'clock on Monday next, the opinions upon the two points, [su]ggested in the note of this morning should be committed to writing and sent to the President by that time." From the Secretary of State (Edmund Randolph) on behalf of the President (George Washington). Addressor name is not given and letter is unsigned, possibly not written by the hand of Edmund Randolph.
