At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Hattie E. Figures from Henry S. Figures dated March 4, 1863. Mentions that he had his ambrotype taken and provides no updates on furlough. Describes the trying task of getting a furlough from Law's Brigade of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Also of note is Figures' statement that "Negroes are selling high in Richmond.
