Cosigned by Robert Alexander. Washington refers to himself in the third person seven times. Alexander wants to sell 300 acres of Maryland land his wife inherited from her father to George Washington. Washington hoped to exchange the plot with Thomas Hanson Marshall for land adjacent to Mount Vernon. The agreement was contingent upon approval by Alexander's wife, who had not reached the age of 21. Alexander agreed he would not sell the land to anyone without Washington's approval, "this clause is expressly provided as a means to induce her Compliance because it is highly presumable that if she is once satisfied that it is for her Husbands Interest to part with the Land and finds that he can do it but to one person only she will not be so unreasonable as to withhold her consent." Washington eventually purchased the land in March 1779. Docketed June 27.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
