At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Book of reports and state papers sent to the 1st session of the 18th Congress. Each report or group of papers is paginated separately. Contains first printing of Monroe Doctrine (report #2), which is 15 pages long. Given to Congress on 2 December 1823 the doctrine precluded European intervention in any part of the Western Hemisphere. In original sheep binding. Light rubbing and periodic foxing.
