At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wilson expresses his distress at Helen Gardner being hospitalized. He explains that his distress arises mostly from her inability to continue to do her fine work. He also offers his assistance in helping her attain her goal. Typed on White House stationery in green ink with header, The White House Washington. Stationery watermarked Whiting's Woven Linen.
