At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Two letters addressed to Charles M. Allaben from Charles and Ruth E.C., dated August 7 and August 8, 1943. The first letter from Charles describes training in the military and welcomes him to the navy. The second letter is from Ruth E.C. who describes Miami, includes a navy song entitled, "The Sand Crab's Bleat," and an Ancient Ode to the U.S. Navy.
