Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One issue of The New York Herald newspaper dated February 22, 1862. Contains news on Civil War battles and current events. Of particular interest is a map of Fort Donelson and the areas surrounding. There are also mentions of the anniversary of President Washington's Birthday, and the text of the proclamation given by President Lincoln to celebrate Washington's birth. (see GLC06038) An article on the fourth page laments the death of Willie Lincoln. On the last page of the newspaper there is an article concerning Nathaniel Gordon's accused crime of international slave trade and his execution.
