At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter to "Head" dated May 7, 1968. Apologizes for not being to meet up recently but assures him that he will make it back to Chicago for a visit. He will likely be deployed to Vietnam in July and is making attempts to not be sent there. Wishes that he'll never be drafted, "This whole ___ Army blows."
