At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One wirephoto taken by Associated Press dated April 9, 1968. Depicts the mule-drawn casket of Dr. King at the head of a procession of thousands of marchers. The line of marchers extends to the horizon. In life King often led mass civil rights marches. Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson is visible towards the back right of Dr. King's casket.
