At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One press photo of group children sitting at a table of white adults. Markings indicate where to crop the image. On reverse side contains the printed newsclipping which describes a white family that took in a black family after riots destroyed their home. The white family received death threats. Also stamped "Received Examiner Reference Library, July 29, 1967."
