At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph entitled, "Civil Rights Demonstrators Block Bridge," taken by Associated Press dated March 7, 1964. Image is of five demonstrators from the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sitting in the middle of the road blocking the Manhattan approach to the Triborough Bridge. CORE dumped garbage on the bridge in protest of conditions in East Harlem schools.
