At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telephoto entitled "Little Rock, Ark.," taken by UPI dated September 25, 1957. Image is of the Little Rock Nine being escorted into Central High School by the National Guard. Wire transfer information states that paratroopers escroted nine Black students safely into the school. Story reported by UPI correspondent Louis Cassels.
