At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One address entitled, "President Roosevelt's Address to the Nation," dated Thursday, September 11, 1941 originally delivered over broadcast. Front cover of document contains a long quote related to the Nazi Party in Germany. In this passage, Roosevelt compares them to rattlesnakes and calls for defense against them.
