At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Paulding, Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, George Bacnroft, Richard Henry Dana, Wiliam H. Prescott, Miss C. M. Sedgewick, James Fenimore Cooper, Edward Everett, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Gilmore Simms, Henry W. Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Daniel Webster, John Pendleton Kennedy, and James Russell Lowell. Envelope adhered to the inside of the back cover contains a smaller envelope with a letter addressed to a W. H. Sutherland in Cincinatti, Ohio (see GLC09690.02). A sticker on the inside of the front cover also has the name "W. H. Sutherland."
