At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Richard J. DiChristina from Joyce Robinson dated July 30, 1969. Pertains to her schoolwork
and Richard's basic training. She mentions her expected trip to visit Richard at Fort Dix. Relays that she will stop at her Uncle Bob's in East Brunswick, New Jersey on her way there and provides his phone number for Richard to call her on Wednesday night. Joyce mentions family who are visiting and that Beth and Steve just had a baby boy. She writes that she is "so lonely around here all by myself" and that she is looking forward to seeing him.
