At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telegram from Harry and Nina Parker to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 27, 1974. The Parkers support the impeachment of President Nixon. Both writers are independents and wrote, "Undersigned independents urge you to preserve countries morality don't equivocate wrongs perpetrated President responsible must go."
