At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from John C. Burton to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 27, 1974. Burton supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "The democrats in all their corruption are quickly becoming the sole owners of the ‘clean Government’ issue. This is outrageous! Do we really think that our president is above the law mearly [sic] because of party affiliation?"
