At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from R. L. Mande to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated August 4, 1974. Mande supports the impeachment of President Nixon and changed their voter registration from Republican to Democrat based on the Nixon administration's actions and writes, "Well, Carlos, you did it - I address you as Carlos which tho too familiar is better than if I were to use your last name which I now would spell Woodhead."
