At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telegram from Elizabeth Templeton to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 23, 1974. Templeton is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "To impeach him or force his resignation would bring about catastrophic chaos in both domestic and foreign affairs. The political "bloodhounds" who wish to destroy the President should be defeated."
