At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Herman C. Fawson to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated May 27, 1974. Fawson supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He lists seven grievances with the Nixon administration and writes, "I have lost much faith in the presidency, I do not wish to lose faith in Congress."
