At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Dorothy D. Gordon and Robert S. Gordon to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 6, 1973. The Gordons are against the impeachment of President Nixon. They write, "The pendulum has swung exceedingly far. Objective fairness is bound to reassert itself. The President deserves praise rather than condemnation."
