At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Jean I. Hall to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Hall supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She is frustrated at Nixon and his contempt for political office and writes, "I have two small children and so am concerned that our government be restored in a fashion that gives them a chance for a meaningful democracy."
