At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from John C. Keeney to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Keeney supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He informs Moorhead that, "The only hope of every endangered innocent person has is for your House Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment proceedings at once."
