At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Tom Hall to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 27, 1973. Hall supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He recounts the crimes of Nixon stating, "The future of our democracy lies upon whether or not Richard Nixon is brought to justice. If he can get by with it, the path towards dictatorship will be opened."
