At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Edgar Schenk to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated August 23, 1943. Ed says he received a good deal, he will attend gunners school in Florida where he will live in the "Jungle." He describes the location as "really away from civilization." Ed describes the living and working conditions and his admiration for the location. At the end of the letter he includes his new address. Signed "Ed."
