At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Richard C. Miller to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated May 25, 1942. Richard notes he is running a "Syncopation" show on base. He justifies his irregularity in answering letters because "ladies first." He invites Leonard to Petersburg, Virginia for a weekend. After which he asks how Leonard's "socializing" is going. Signed as "Dick."
