At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to William E. Johnson from Roseann dated May 7, 1965. She mentions to Bill her errands including picking up "pictures...from Berkly [sic], and then home (Marion's) and to the dentist." She writes that she would like to know how his first day (presumably aboard the U.S.S. Rogers) had gone.
