Cordelia Williams thanks her children for their thoughtful letter. She says that in the past month, five of her close friends have died. This somewhat put a damper on her birthday, except for the fact that her children all came, which was the greatest gift of all. She says that Angela will have to set an alarm to make sure she is on time as she will be "the last to leave in the marriage". She says it's supposed to rain the following day and then asks her children what they think the results of the demonstrations about integration and busing will be. She has tried her melons and they were quite good and her tomatoes are doing well so she hopes the children will come visit and get to try them. She says they should all pray that Dolores' plans work out and that none of them have ever dealt with the problems that Virginia faces. Cordelia alludes to difficulties between Virginia and Booker saying that Virginia needs sympathy and that Booker knows what a good thing he has and will make sure not to lose it. Cordelia promises that God will act in time, so they should have a little patience and says she wishes Virginia loved God as much as she loved Booker. She ends by saying that "Danny Thom" raised $96.00 for St. Jude's Hospital but "some Devil" tried to "assienate" him but was stopped.
