At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document certifying that Eugene W. Williams was "intrusted" with $461.99 by S.R. Weaver 1st Lt. A.C. Agent Officer for J.P. Tillman, Col FD. The first page is acknowledgment that Eugene Williams returned the funds and is signed by S.R. Weaver. The reverse contains instructions for filling out the form. The third page has two forms, one detailing the funds "intrusted" to Eugene Williams (signed by S.R. Weaver) and the other giving Eugene Williams pecuniary responsibilty. The reverse contains instructions for filling out the forms on page three.
