At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This letter from the Michigan Department of Health states that they do not yet have a copy of the record of death of LeRioi Williams to send to Cordelia Williams but will get it to her as soon as possible. It is signed by the acting director, Gertrude Pienta of the Bureau of Records and Statistics.
