At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brigadier General of the U.S Army writes a condolence to Cordelia Williams for the loss of her son, LeRoi. He offers his apologies and says that at least her son was fighting for a good cause when he lost his life. The letter is signed by the General and stamped with the date written. It was written on stationary from the War Department.
