At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A newspaper clipping from the Washington Times Herald on July 11, 1960. The first article, "B-70 Held Perfect Plane for Spy Role," describes the proposed B-70 bomber plane and explains the disagreement over whether or not to fund the construction of the planes. The second article, "Gates to Use Extra Funds for Weapons," relates Defense Secretary Thomas S. Gates, Jr.'s decision to allocate extra money to "bolster the United States military might."
