At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Map of territories included in the Japanese propaganda concept, the "Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere." The concept promoted the cultural and economic unity of the region by a self-sufficient bloc of Asian nations led by the Japanese and free of Western powers. Map depicts land, sea, and air routes; national, regional, and provincial borders; and marks natural resources. Includes territories in the region held by Western powers and Japanese military bases. Side of map reads: (Weekly Report Appendix No. 238) Approved for third class mail on October 1, 1936. Printed and published on April 30, 1941.
